Fat from plant origins is a useful energy source and high fibre is important to horses, which obtain most of their energy from hindgut fermentation of fibre. The bacteria which perform this breakdown produce vitamins as by-products. These are important in maintaining skin and coat condition.
Lysine is an essential amino acid within horse feeds, conventionally obtained from lucerne meal. It's required to aid abundant levels of protein in the diet. Particularly important for the growth and development of young horses.
“I had occasion to take over the welfare of a mare who had severely lost condition after its owner was hospitalised and had to find a proxy carer. That hadn’t panned out so well, so by the time the mare arrived at my place, you could see all her ribs. Her back end was sunken in, she had lost all muscle tone, her hooves were cracked and her coat was coarse and in poor condition.
